Day Trip To Maheshwar Fort, Madhya Pradesh | Places To Visit Near Indore

Maheshwar Fort, Madhya Pradesh | Places To Visit Near Indore

Indore is one of the most beautiful cities in India. With a vibrant culture and a love for tasty street food, one can not stop oneself from falling in love with this amazing city.

It was also, recently awarded the title of the cleanest city in India.

However, it is not just its food, culture or cleanliness, but also its places to visit that attract people. There are a few amazing places in the close vicinity of Indore.

Today, in this post, I am going to share my travel experience with one such place near Indore - MAHESHWAR. Check out all the pics and videos to get a wholesome experience.

Day trip to Maheshwar

Not many people are aware of this place. Even those living in Indore either haven't heard of it or haven't visited it yet.

I guess that is the reason why this place is still clean and not overflowing with people, for now!
Check out the Mobile Wallpapers from my Maheshwar Trip.

Maheshwar basically has the fort of Devi Ahilyabai, the Queen of the Holkar family who ruled Indore.

She was very popular in that part of India. This can be confirmed by the fact that the Indore University, as well as the airport, both are named after her.

The Fort

As one enters the premises, one is greeted by a palace made in a very unique style which reminds us of the Maratha architecture to some extent.

In simple words, its elegant and bautiful.

One can go into the rather smallish palace for a small tour. Outside, one can find a statue of Devi Ahilyabai holding a shivling (Lord Shiva statue).

The whole premises is constantly monitored by CCTV cameras as well.
This is the overall area of the palace...however, the major attractions are yet to come.

The Shiv Temple

There is a passage just opposite the entrance of the main palace building which leads to stone stairs going down. It is here, that you realize, that the whole structure is built on the banks of river Narmada.

There is a beautiful shiva temple that opens up to an even more beautiful ghat, more on that later.

The whole temple and its surrounding structures are made up of stone. Inside is the shiva statue with photos of Devi Ahilyabai.

Devi Ahilyabai was an ardent worshipper of Lord Shiva and hence had this temple built near her palace and on the banks of Narmada so that she could daily pray to Lord Shiva and bathe his statue with the holy water of river Narmada.

The whole ambiance of the temple is very calm & refreshing, and one can sit for hours on the stairs leading to the main temple.

Some areas are not open for everyone as the structure has grown old now. And since not many people know about it, there isn't much crowd and one can easily explore it.

The Ghat

Even on a bright sunny day in the afternoon, one can feel the cool breeze blowing which constantly refreshes you.

The evenings are a different experience altogether. With evening arti, cool temperature and awesome environment, the whole ambiance is just surreal.

The whole architecture of the temple, as well as the entry gate to the ghat, is beautiful and breathtaking. Photos just can't do justice to it. It has to be seen in person to appreciate its beauty.

One can find lots of fishes circling around some water corners.

It looks like people visiting, or staying there, feed these fishes at those spots. So now fishes usually stay there during the day. Its really exciting and is definitely a beautiful sight.

One look at the ghat and you may feel you have seen this place somewhere. especially if you watch Bollywood movies.

And you are not wrong!

This is a decently popular ghat amongst Bollywood as well. Some South Indian films, as well as few Bollywood movies like Yamla Pagla Deewana, had a few scenes shot here.

Most recently, the scene of Akshay Kumar cycling on a ghat in the movie PADMAN was shot here.

There is also an option to do boating on a motorboat on the river Narmada. Depending on the price, the duration of the boat ride is decided.

However, it's definitely worth doing. You get a wide view of the whole Maheshwar fort, which is amazing!

The Rest

There are a few shops that sell handloom made sarees which are really good and a specialty there.

If you are hungry after all this site seeing, there is a neat little cafe called Labbooz cafe.

Its a quiet and good looking place where you can relax and also have something to eat. The food is tasty and not very expensive.

So the next time you are in Indore and have a day to spare, make sure to visit Maheshwar fort. It will definitely be a day well spent.

I would recommend leaving from Indore in the afternoon at around 3. That way you can reach Maheshwar in an hour and by the time you reach the ghat, it will be evening time and you enjoy the surreal weather along with the evening artis.
