Paragliding in Khajjiar, Dalhousie | Things to do in Dalhousie!

Dalhousie is one of the most beautiful Hill Stations in Himachal Pradesh. Situated in the Dhauladhar Range of the Himalayas, it owes its name to a British Governor General of the Pre Independence India.

It is a beautiful town situated in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, and a must visit for all mountain lovers. However, in my personal opinion, it doesn't get the amount of attention it deserves. Other, more popular destinations like Shimla and Manali, attract most of the crowd.

What that does help with is that Dalhousie is relatively cleaner and untouched than those places.

There are plenty of places of visit and activities to do. In this post, I will share my experience of paragliding in Khajjiar.

Khajjiar, Dalhousie

Khajjiar is a very famous tourist spot in Dalhousie. It is situated on a small plateau amidst the mighty Himalayan range. There is a huge ground on the plateau covered with green grass. Its completely open and gets abundant sunshine.

At the center of the ground is a pond. The pond is actually fed by a water stream generated by rains and melting ice caps. The area around the ground is covered by meadows and forests. During snowfall seasons, it looks really amazing cloaked in White.

Thanks to such an amazing visual, it also sometimes referred to as Mini Switzerland of India.

Though the location is primarily popular for the visual I described above, there are plenty of activities available to be indulged in. Once can do horse riding, play outdoor games, do Zorbing etc. There is also an option to stay overnight in a tent and enjoy a campfire.

In this posts, I will now share my paragliding experience, which I think is the best activity one can do there.

Paragliding in Khajjiar, Dalhousie

There are many separate groups, comprising of local people, that operate the paragliding activity in Khajjiar. When you reach the main ground you will find many people, belonging to these groups, roaming around inviting the tourists to experience paragliding.

Though they operate as separate groups, almost all groups converge at a single takeoff point. All jumps/takeoffs happen from one single spot.

The paragliding there had 2 options to choose from. One small duration and the second was of longer duration. I personally felt the smaller one lasted just above 5 mins. The longer one, which I personally took, lasted approximately 15 mins. I would also suggest going for the long flight.

The group I was traveling with had 4 people in total. The marketing agent (couldn't think of a more appropriate term than this) of the paragliding team approached us and quoted Rs 2000/- per person for the longer duration flight. However, we managed to bargain and bring it down to Rs 1500/- per person.

Travel Tip: So next time you are visiting Khajjiar and plan to do paragliding, try and bargain as much as you can.
Once the deal is set, they take you in their vehicles to the foot of a hill, from the top of which you are made to jump. If you are not experienced with mountain climbing or any sort of trekking, the climb to the top of the hill can be a really painful exercise for you. However, those who are fit and have great stamina shouldn't face many issues.

You, in your slow and steady climb, would be dumbstruck to see young local kids in their teens, carrying heavy parachute backpacks and just sprinting to the top. Just reminds us of how negligent we have become, living our luxurious lives, towards our health!

Once you reach the top, you will see there are many like you who are ready to take the jump. There is a flat area suitable for the takeoff. There are plenty of local people involved in paragliding. They unfold the parachute, help you gain speed and one even sits behind you to steer the parachute correctly.

The one who glides with you calls himself a pilot, and rightly so. He is actually piloting a flying vehicle.
At the top, one needs to wait for his/her turn. Till then you can see others taking off and think of a strategy of how you will take off. When your turn comes, you are strapped safely to the parachute. There is the pilot behind you and 2 people on either side to help you gain speed initially.

When its time to jump, just forget the fear, take a run and jump. There is a small space in the backpack for you to sit after you have taken the jump.

Now just relax, and enjoy the view from above. Feel the cold air hitting you in your face. Feel your hands go numb. it is such an amazing feeling while gliding down. You can see the snow clad peaks at a distance more clearly. There are dense forests below your feet and the blue cloudy sky above you.
It's a surreal experience altogether!

The pilot does all the steering and finally gets you down safely at the landing point. Once you are down, you can pay if you found the experience satisfactory, which is always the case.

They also shoot photos and videos of you while landing using a DSLR. The person at the landing point uses the zoom to capture you as you prepare to land and finally do. You can get these images by paying a small fee.

And if you are an adventure enthusiast, then you can use an action camera mounted to your helmet, safety belt or even a selfie stick. You will capture amazing moments to cherish later.

Final Thoughts

I will be completely honest, I was scared initially at the idea of jumping off a hill with a parachute.

I mean, who won't!

But by the time I climbed the hill to the reach the takeoff point, the excitement exceeded the fear. And as the Hindi tagline goes "Darr Ke Aage Jeet Hai" (There is success beyond the fear), I too found my success.

The paragliding at Khajjiar was a first of such adventurous experiences for me. And the awesome experience I had, has made me hungry for more. And this time, I will make sure to take an action cam with me.

The paragliding experience was one of the best experiences I have had so far! And it definitely made my, already great, Dalhousie Trip much more awesome!
